Data Center Knowledge Reviews Open Compute Hardware

KC Mares was interviewed for this global data center industry magazine in an article covering the purchase and usage of open compute hardware. The majority of data center IT managers do not view the price difference of open source hardware significant enough, even though Facebook promotes their Open Compute Project (OCP) as the new low-cost switch to make. Companies that don't operate large data centers or make significant hardware purchases are not compelled to install OCP and there's a lack of awareness about this alternative hardware. KC explained, "While OCP is talked about in data center press and conferences, it's still new to most IT folks and they are afraid to stick their neck out on a purchase with someone other than a well-known brand. Most IT managers don't really care that Facebook endorses it, as they are not Facebook, and they have different needs." The article covers the role of the Open Compute Foundation as well. Datacenter Dynamics Cover Article Featuring KC Mares

The international magazine, Datacenter Dynamics, featured a real person on their cover for the first time with an article entitled, "Who is KC Mares and what is he doing in Reno?" That's a good question and one that Yevgeniy Sverdlik answered in his three-page article. It covers my work with Sun Microsystems, Yahoo! and Exodus as well as my experiences with the EPA in true documentary style. Never to leave renewable energy off the table, the article highlights my latest project to provide natural gas fueled power at the Reno Technology Park. My involvement with the Silicon Valley Leadership Group is mentioned as well. The interview and article was very rewarding, and you may read it here! »

Large Reno Project to Generate Its Own Power

Data centers are in the business of supplying power, and lots of it. But that usually means creating a mission-critical environment supported by electricity from a local utility. An ambitious new project near Reno, Nevada plans to expand the data center development model to include massive on-site power generation from multiple sources in addition to a power feed from the local utility. Taxation drives data center location

The cost of power is a major consideration when locating a mega data center. But another factor is playing an increasing role: Taxes. "The site selection process has changed from low energy, to low energy and low taxes, to taxes and low energy," says KC Mares, president and chief energy officer for Megawatt Consulting, which designs energy efficient data centers. Designing for ‘Ultra-Low’ Efficiency and PUE

The ongoing industry debate about energy efficiency reporting based on the Power Usage Efficiency (PUE) metric is about to get another jolt. Veteran data center specialist KC Mares reports that he has worked on three projects this year that used unconventional design decisions to achieve “ultra-low PUEs” of between 1.046 and 1.08. Those PUE numbers are even lower than those publicly reported by Google, which has announced an average PUE of 1.20 across its facilities, with one facility performing at a 1.11 PUE in the first quarter of 2009.

CIO Magazine, 2001 - Electrical Grid

It was 2001 and the California "energy crisis" hadn't quite hit, but myself and others were doing what we could to protect against a foreseen uncertainty. CIO Magazine was on the beat realizing that this was a salient topic of the day. I've always been a fan of on-site generation, so long as they are clean.
